Last year, we launched the PubPub Sustainability Fund to secure the long-term future of PubPub. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and a major overhaul of PubPub’s infrastructure that reduced server costs by more than 99%, we’ve reached that goal.
Earlier this year, we set out to raise $300,000. However, after several months on the new infrastructure, we’ve confirmed the funds raised as of September 2026 are sufficient to cover PubPub’s server costs indefinitely—assuming a nominal 4% annual return. Therefore, we’re officially closing the PubPub Sustainability Fund. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!
This month, we launched the Infrastructure Longevity Fund to support the shared infrastructure behind everything we build: Underlay, our open-source tools and protocols, and the common services that support our work across communities, including PubPub.
The lessons learned from re-architecting PubPub completely changed what sustainability means for us, and directly led to our new way of working. Now, at KF, sustainability is no longer a fundraising target; it’s a design constraint. Our goal is to build infrastructure that has a sustainability model for its server costs that can outlast the ups and downs of any particular funding cycle.
All future donations to Knowledge Futures will support the Infrastructure Longevity Fund, helping ensure that the work communities entrust to us remains accessible and useful for a very long time.
